Title: Case studies in VWD and Hemophilia A: The key questions
Summary: In a case-based, interactive format, this CME-accredited symposium will explore key questions in the diagnosis and management of von Willebrand disease (VWD) and hemophilia A and B. Faculty members will sit on two panels which will consider cases highlighting controversies, areas of uncertainty, and recent developments in—and ongoing clinical investigation related to—factor replacement therapy for VWD and hemophilia. During the cases, the audience will be polled at different branch-points (the key questions), and will use an audience response system (ARS) to answer them. The panelists will then call on data slides to comment on the audiences' response via the ARS. Topics to be addressed in the cases will include the following: 1) safety of plasma-derived clotting factor concentrates for treatment of von Willebrand disease (VWD), hemophilia A, and hemophilia B; 2) avoidance of inhibitor development; 3) immune tolerance induction (ITI).

Summary: This session will focus on how advances in genomics can impact both the diagnosis of hemophilia and the care of these patients. Advances in gene sequencing technology and mutational analyses will be discussed as well as how these newer technologies may be used to advance the understanding of disease pathophysiology, and to predict or prevent complications of the disease, such as inhibitors. Overall, this program will highlight how a better understanding of the relationship between genotype and phenotype could lead to new approaches and improved outcomes for hemophilia patients.

Title: VWF/VWD: A new paradigm shift in clinical management moving from diagnosis to testing and treatment
Summary: This interactive dinner symposium will feature well known bleeding disorder experts in the field of Hematology presenting on a new paradigm shift in the management of von Willebrand disease. Presentations will move from the structure and function of VWF under physiological flow conditions to the challenges in diagnosis and clinical testing for von Willebrand disease. A clinical management discussion upon accurate diagnosis will highlight the role of pharmacokinetic profiles for VWF/FVIII concentrates. A final review of challenging VWD cases will be presented to provide solutions in the management of the variability found in von Willebrand disease
