| Diagnostic strategy for VWD multidisiplinary collaboration in pediatrics Mara Nunez. |
Abstract
The Instituto Nacional de Pediatría (INP) has implemented a multidisciplinary strategy to enhance early detection of von Willebrand disease (vWD) in pediatric patients. This initiative integrates clinical collaboration across Pediatrics, Gynecology, and Otolaryngology, recognizing that bleeding symptoms often present in contexts managed by these specialties. The strategy includes targeted screening protocols, symptom-based referral pathways, and educational sessions to raise awareness among frontline clinicians. By leveraging specialty-specific touchpoints—such as epistaxis in otolaryngology, menorrhagia in gynecology, and unexplained bruising or bleeding in pediatrics—the approach facilitates timely identification and diagnostic evaluation. Preliminary outcomes suggest improved case recognition and streamlined access to hematologic assessment. This model underscores the value of cross-specialty collaboration in addressing underdiagnosed bleeding disorders and may serve as a scalable framework for other institutions.
