Abstract
Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT) is under the remit of “ischemic stroke” in children. Brain dysfunction occurs due to thrombotic occlusion of cerebral veins and/or the dural venous sinuses along with associated cerebral hemorrhage and ischemia. Whilst CSVT is rare, it remains underrecognized in children due to the nonspecific presentation, resulting in delayed or missed diagnosis. In this talk, we will explore the nuances in diagnosing and treating CSVT in children aged 29 days – 18 years old and briefly touch upon neonatal CSVT. We will discuss the challenges in managing complications of childhood CSVT, long term outcomes, advances in treatment including endovascular interventional considerations, ethical aspects and important updates in practical approach to medical treatment using case examples.
