Abstract
Clinical guidance comes in many forms but can be fundamentally separated into two categories: clinical practice guidelines (CPG’s) and informal guidance. Examples of informal guidance include “consensus” documents, “How I Treat” articles, grand rounds lectures, and clinical advice shared between colleagues. CPG’s and informal guidance both provide recommendations, but differ with respect to the methods underpinning their development, the main type of recommendations they offer, and their relative strengths and limitations. The objective of this talk is to highlight the similarities and differences between CPG’s and informal guidance and to discuss the implications of these differences for end users.
